A LETTER TO CANADIAN MPs
When Hamas thanks you for your service perhaps it is time to rethink Canadian policy. Therefore I have written a letter to all Canadian members of parliament.
June 5, 2025
Dear Honourable Members of Parliament,
What has happened to Canada that their Jews are uncertain of the future in their own country? Jewish citizens, mostly Canadian born, who have invested their entire lives into building careers, businesses, the arts and cultural institutions are feeling increasingly unwelcome and afraid in their home.
This letter is prompted by the news that the RCMP is investigating IDF soldiers for war crimes in Gaza. Although this was reported by The Star and denied initially by the RCMP commissioner, this seems to be a structural investigation initiated by the London office in response to complaints by Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME). Despite their benign name CJPME is an anti-Israel group advocating for the delegitimizationand destruction of Israel. They have cynically introduced anti-Palestinian racism recently adopted by Toronto District School Board. APR will serve to criminalize Zionism, the belief held by 90% of Jews. Zionism is the conviction that Jews are entitled to self-determination in their ancestral homeland, Israel.
The RCMP’s press release, meant to reassure Canadians only serves to highlight the double standard. Opening a “structural” rather than “criminal” investigation is an obfuscation of the fact that pro-terror factions in Canada are being appeased. If this is routine process, where are the portals for crimes against the Tibetans or Uyghurs, war crimes in Sudan or Syria? Wasting the RCMP’s limited budget on collecting information about IDF soldiers, fighting a moral war it never chose, is the scandal here.
How is this happening in Canada? The sole Jewish nation is held to an entirely different standard than any other country. Its army, the one that warns civilians in order to mitigate harm, that provides electricity to Gazans, that builds field hospitals when Hamas overtakes all their healthcare centres as military bases, that one that risks its own soldiers’ lives to provide aid is constantly rebuked by many in the Liberal government. The army of the sole democracy in the Middle East, that has an active legal department and a war crimes investigation unit is the one singled out for castigation by the Canadian government.
War is incredibly ugly. Urban warfare is even uglier and never without civilian casualties. Yet this war has the lowest civilian to combatant ratio of any urban war in history, in spite of Hamas doing everything to increase civilian deaths. Hamas is open about this strategy, saying clearly that their civilian martyrs must be sacrificed in order to demonize Israel. They’re open about their wish to kill all Jews worldwide. Yet your government continues to insist that Israel supply aid, knowing that it is routinely stolen by Hamas and sold back to Gazans at exorbitant prices in order to finance their terrorist activity. Hamas warehouses, enabled by the UN, were filled with supplies when overrun by Gazan civilians a few days ago.
Our government insists that Israel should be able to live peacefully next to a country that is run by a government that openly advocates for the genocide of all Jews. Canadian tax dollars are being spent to investigate the IDF, finance UNWRA who is complicit with Hamas and contribute to the UN, the chief launderer of Hamas propaganda. What an insult to your Jewish citizens, making them pay for their own demonization.
Mark Carney, the new prime minister, immediately released $150 million to the CBC who subtly and unceasingly vilifies Israel. In every news story, invariably the Hamas narrative is recounted first, accepted as truth. It is sometimes followed by a disclaimer that Israel objects or alleges something different. Add that to the tax bill of your Canadian Jews.
When Jews are murdered in Washington or attempted murders occur in Boulder, when assaults take place in Brooklyn or on the streets of Toronto , when Jewish businesses are vandalized, when synagogues are fire bombed in Vancouver , Montreal or Toronto, when girls’ schools are shot at, when Jewish institutions require 24 hour protection due to constant threats of violence, this has not occurred in a vacuum. These murderers, attackers, vandals and those advocating violence are not unhinged lone wolves. They are being influenced by the constant barrage of anti-Israel misinformation that our media is broadcasting. Some of this misinformation on social media is designed to purposely demonize Jews. In our mainstream media, Hamas propaganda is unwittingly reprinted and retractions a few days later, go all but unnoticed. Our MPs are influenced by those tall tales. Decent people now believe that Israel is uniquely evil among the nations and deserves to be destroyed. The young generation of university educated students believe Israel is responsible for all societal ills. That is the essence of antisemitism and you are allowing it to run rampant. When Hamas propaganda has been accepted by the CBC, UN, MPs and NGO‘s will the RCMP be far behind?
Where is Marco Mendicino, one of Israel’s few Canadian Liberal allies, as chief of staff now? Silent. Chrystia Freeland, the deputy prime minister, has refused to meet me, a Jewish constituent in her riding, to hear my concerns for the last 20 months. Melanie Joly, the previous foreign minister, insists that the demographics of her riding dictate support for the pro-Palestinian contingent. If she were truly pro-Palestinian she may want to release Gazans from the hell inflicted upon them by Hamas, who spent every penny to turn Gaza into an arena of war in which they could be sacrificed.
Anita Anand, in one of her first statements as foreign minister, chose to castigate Israel for its “aggression” while completely ignoring that this war started because Hamas is a genocidal terrorist organization on Israel’s doorstep that raped young women, burnt families alive, beheaded babies, tortured and dismembered civilians and took 250 hostages of which 58 still remain in the tunnels of Gaza. What does Ms Anand make of Hamas’ vow to repeat Oct 7 a million times until all Israelis are dead?
Mark Carney, after repeating the blood libel of genocide, chose to issue a statement with the UK and France, in which Israel was condemned, and Hamas’ crimes were all but erased. There is no mention of Hamas failing to build a single bomb shelter for its civilians instead of the 500 km of terror tunnels that protect its weaponry and militants. There is no mention of Hamas using rape as a weapon against both men and women. There is no mention of Hamas intentionally starving the Israeli hostages while stealing aid from its own citizens in order to finance terror and demonize Israel. There is no mention of Hamas booby trapping every other house with explosives in order to completely destroy civilian infrastructure. There is no mention of Hamas overtaking every hospital and turning them into military complexes. There is no mention of UNRWA’s complicity, and the fact that Emily Damari was held as a hostage at an UNRWA facility.
Instead, Ottawa spent $128,000 to hire a UK contractor, the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD), to monitor pro-Israel social media posts. ISD dismissed mainstream Zionists as “right wing extremists” motivated by “anti-Muslim hatred.“ The statement that “Policing of protests related to Israel – Hamas conflict has been inconsistent” is described as right wing extremism. Yet Jewish counter protesters are more likely to be arrested in Canada than those calling for genocide against Jews.
At the Walk for Israel in Toronto, three weeks ago, “pro- Palestinian” demonstrators were allowed to scream “Globalize the Intifada” and “There is only one solution. Intifada revolution.” They held posters with upside down red triangles, a Hamas symbol to identify murder victims, in front of police, who failed to act. When questioned, the police said that these protesters would be charged with hate crimes later, but no charges were laid. It would have been impossible given that most wore masks and coveredtheir faces with keffiyehs. ISD called recognizing these chants as “protesting for the death of Jews and the Jewish state” right wing extremism. Nice to have a rationalization for gaslighting Jews.
It is easy to slough off this five alarm fire by calling Jews anxious or paranoid. All this while Hamas’ propaganda is credulously accepted. Why will the RCMP be any different than our MPs accepting ISD‘s report and dismissing Jewish concerns?
1. The “structural investigation” by the RCMP into Israeli war crimes be halted immediately.
2. Make funding to universities and colleges contingent on addressing campus antisemitism.
3. Adopt robust use of IHRA definition.
4. Defund UNRWA.
5. Reject misuse of anti-Palestinian racism.
6. Educate MPs and all federal employees about anti-Zionism, the new incarnation of antisemitism.
7. Adopt a federal strategy to enforce and prosecute hate crimes.
8. CBC’s anti-Israel bias must be independently investigated, not by the CBC ombudsman.
There is not a single country that has adopted anti-Zionism as its official policy that has not become inhospitable to Jews. Should Canada follow in those countries’ footsteps it does not bode well for Canada’s future. Genocides begin with words and laws first, not systematic murder. Instead of repeating platitudes that antisemitism has no place in Canada, please act to save this country that so many of us love.
Sincerely,
Cynthia Lazar
